Frictional Games, the renowned Swedish developer known for the popular series Penumbra and Amnesia, has announced its plans to shift its focus away from horror in its future game releases.
In a recent interview with creative director Thomas Grip, he emphasized that emotional engagement is the key element in Frictional Games’ approach to game development, prioritizing it over pure fear-inducing experiences (via 80lv). Grip stated, “While all of our games have had horror elements, our main objective is to create a ‘playable immersion’ in the gaming experience.”
Grip praised the team’s holistic approach in incorporating themes of motherhood in Amnesia: Rebirth and philosophical inquiries into defining humanity in SOMA. He stated, “We presented these themes within a horror context, but they could be explored in other genres as well.” The creative director further added, “In our future projects, we intend to reduce the horror elements to shift the focus on other emotional qualities.”
He summarized, “I am confident that our games will still retain the essence of Frictional Games. The immersive experience, the personal journey, and a holistic vision are the defining characteristics of a Frictional game – not limited to horror alone.”
Frictional Games recently launched Amnesia: The Bunker, a World War 1 setting where protagonist Henri Clément is trapped with a monster that responds to player choices in their struggle for survival. Their upcoming title promises to be an even larger sci-fi horror game that delves into philosophical concepts akin to SOMA.
