Exciting news for fans of the pizza-loving, crime-fighting mutant reptiles! San Diego Comic-Con has announced that Nickelodeon and Paramount have obtained the global rights to the original animated series of the iconic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles along with its legendary theme song.
Nickelodeon has revealed that they will be airing the acclaimed Fred Wolf series in its original form, consisting of all 193 episodes that aired over a span of 9 years. The series will first debut digitally on Nickelodeon in the U.S. this month and will later be available on Nickelodeon-branded channels and digital platforms globally.
The acquisition of the rights was announced during the Hall H presentation of Mutant Mayhem at SDCC’s Paramount Pictures panel. At the event, Mutant Mayhem director Jeff Rowe and franchise co-creator Kevin Eastman offered a sneak peek of the upcoming movie. However, the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes hindered the presence of writers and actors at the Comic-Con gathering, as they battle against corporate executives for fair compensation.

In 1984, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was created by Eastman and Peter Laird as a comic book series. It later gained immense popularity with the release of the 1987 animated series. This success led to a live-action TV series called Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation and multiple film adaptations, including the 1990 live-action film featuring Corey Feldman. The trilogy, which included a movie where the Turtles traveled back to feudal Japan, has since amassed a devoted fan following.
In 2012, Nickelodeon introduced a CG-animated series and later a 2D-animated series titled Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 2019, marking an attempt to revitalize the franchise. Paramount, on the other hand, began their big-screen endeavor with the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 2014, followed by Out of the Shadows in 2016. Now, executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg bring us the latest installment, Mutant Mayhem, promising more thrilling ninja action.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem will hit theaters on August 2.
