‘Terrifier’ Returns to Cinemas: The Original Horror Classic Is Back

While other genres struggle to attract audiences to theaters, the horror genre remains a financial success. In particular, the slasher genre has experienced a modern revival with “Scream” and “Halloween” leading the way. However, when it comes to original slashers, there’s no name scarier in horror than Art the Clown from “Terrifier.” This murderous clown has quickly become a genre icon, thanks to the surprise success of “Terrifier 2” last October. And now, the original “Terrifier” is returning to theaters this week, starting on Wednesday, July 19.

What’s “Terrifier” About?

The original “Terrifier” doesn’t attempt to reinvent the slasher sub-genre. It follows two unfortunate young women on Halloween night as they make their way back from a party in the spooky town of Miles County. The terrifying Art the Clown goes on a blood-soaked rampage with no rhyme or reason. The film creates a dreadfully atmospheric and shockingly violent experience, even for seasoned horror fans. Director Damien Leone took clown horror to a whole new level with Art, who has become one of the scariest figures in the genre. A saw kill in the film is particularly stomach-churning and will make you lose your appetite.

Objectively, “Terrifier 2” is the superior film. It features a more traditional “final girl” narrative and expands upon the lore surrounding Art without providing too many explanations. It even manages to make the ending of the original film even more twisted. However, that doesn’t mean the original isn’t worth watching. Especially if you can see it in a theater. “Terrifier” disregards traditional horror rules and delivers some of the most shocking moments in recent genre history. While “Terrifier 2” reportedly caused moviegoers to faint, there are moments in the first film that rival its extreme grotesqueness.

Although “Terrifier” had a very limited release during its original theatrical run in the late 2010s, the success of “Terrifier 2” has breathed new life into the first film. “Terrifier 2” made a staggering $15 million worldwide on a small budget of $250,000. However, the budget for the first film was even smaller at just $35,000. Despite being shown in only 700 theaters across the United States, “Terrifier” is sure to be a box office success, following in the footsteps of “Terrifier 2.” This is also the widest theatrical release that “Terrifier
