Baldur’s Gate 3 Encourages Teammate Tossing

Baldur’s Gate 3 is an incredibly immersive and expansive RPG game that offers players an unprecedented level of freedom and creativity in how they approach encounters. However, in listening to the Baldur’s Gate 3 lead developers at Larian Studios discuss the game, one might think their primary objective is to toss characters around. The Larian team delves into the unique features of each playable race in Baldur’s Gate 3.

During an interview with GameSpot, Larian head and Baldur’s Gate 3 game director Swen Vincke, along with lead writer Adam Smith and lead systems designer Nick Pechenin, share insights into each race’s contributions. While there are intriguing details we’ll explore shortly, the recurring theme that stands out is how easily throwable each race is.

“A fascinating aspect of being a Halfling Barbarian,” Pechenin explains, “is that if you have fellow Halfling Barbarian friends, you can throw each other around like a ball of rage due to your immense strength. It’s a ‘cannonball’ build that I highly recommend.” Vincke adds with a laugh, “It always reminds me of Lord of the Rings.”

However, unlike the famous scene from The Two Towers, the stout Dwarves of Baldur’s Gate 3 are not ideal for tossing. Vincke expresses disappointment, saying, “They’re heavier than they should be. When you lack strength and try to throw them around, it just doesn’t work.” On the other hand, Gnomes are easily throwable.

The video also reveals that Elves and Half-Elves have been the most popular races chosen during early access, closely followed by Tieflings. Smith explains that due to their long lifespans, Elves tend to have a more far-sighted perspective, while Humans, with their comparably shorter lifespans, have different viewpoints.

Half-Elves serve as a fitting blend between these two races, with Vincke jokingly stating, “They’re probably even more popular than the Elves.” Pechenin adds, “Players find it easy to connect with Half-Elves. They offer a touch of fantasy while still being relatable, allowing players to see themselves as Half-Elves.” Moreover, Half-Elves possess impressive stats, especially if previous previews indicating Baldur’s Gate 3 racial bonuses are accurate.

Interestingly, Smith highlights the significant roles played by Tieflings and Gnomes in the game’s plot. “Many Tieflings are fleeing, being some of the first refugees due to previous events in the world. They are outsiders, outcasts,” he explains, referencing popular character Karlach as an example. Gnomes, known for their inventiveness, belong to various factions.

The team also addresses how NPCs in the game react differently to different races. For instance, Drow and Dragonborn characters may receive more negative or cautious responses. Smith notes, “Nobody is shocked to see a Dragonborn, but people do find them unusual since they are not the most common race.” He expresses admiration for Dragonborn by saying, “Just look at them! They are the most visually stunning race I’ve ever seen in a video game – absolutely incredible.”

The addition of Half-Orcs is exciting news for all players, whether they plan to play as one or not. Pechenin explains, “Including Half-Orcs really motivated us to incorporate strong body types. Without Half-Orcs, we might not have included them, but now, thanks to Half-Orcs, everyone can have a muscular physique to the extent they desire.” Smith also confirms that beards are not exclusive to Dwarves and that even Elves can have them.

With an array of appealing choices available, what race does the game’s lead plan to start with? While Vincke contemplates that the Githyanki are his likely favorite due to their “alien” nature and connection to the Astral Plane, where they hunt Mindflayers with tentacled faces, his actual choice is different.

He opts for the stunning Dragonborn once again, saying, “Definitely what I’m going to play. They are the most badass characters we have. They are extremely cool. A Sorcerer Dragonborn with Dragon Blood showcases the special heritage of their ancestors, radiating an incredible aura,” he concludes with a smile. Now you know.

Once you’ve decided on a race, it’s crucial to explore all the available Baldur’s Gate 3 classes to enhance your character’s composition. Additionally, make sure to review the Baldur’s Gate 3 system requirements and ensure you have ample free time, as the game boasts a significant length. If you haven’t already, it’s worth asking about the impressive duration of Baldur’s Gate 3.
