‘The Horrifying Tale of Dolores Roach’ Transforms an Unconventional Theme into an Energetic Journey

Sometimes you have to give credit to a show for its originality and willingness to explore taboo subjects. “The Horror of Dolores Roach” is a prime example of such a show, tackling the abomination of cannibalism and turning it into a thrilling journey filled with macabre twists and turns. While other shows have attempted to address the niche subgenre of cannibalism, few have done so as masterfully as “Dolores Roach.”

Take, for instance, “Santa Clarita Diet,” which offered a terrific and whimsical take on the controversial topic from 2017 to 2019, but with a zombie angle. The standout performances of Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant, along with a great cameo from Nathan Fillion in the pilot episode, made it memorable. However, “The Horror of Dolores Roach” takes a different approach, featuring living people eating the dead. Justina Machado carries most of the weight, appearing in almost every scene. She skillfully portrays the struggle to balance survival instincts with a moral dilemma of the highest order, taking viewers on a wild and increasingly dark ride.

So, what is “The Horror of Dolores Roach” about? Set in the year 2008 in New York’s Washington Heights district, the first episode introduces Dolores as the serious girlfriend of a local drug dealer named Dominic. When the cops raid their apartment, Dolores is arrested for drug possession with intent to distribute and sentenced to 16 years in prison. After her release, she returns to her old neighborhood, only to find it gentrified and unrecognizable. However, a chance encounter with Luis Batista, the son of the owner of a familiar empanada shop, offers her a place to stay in the basement. Struggling to make ends meet, Dolores starts running a massage parlor to earn some cash.

Everything seems to be going well for Dolores until a major event changes her life forever. Luis, despite his well-meaning intentions, gets into a dispute with the building’s landlord over unpaid rent. Dolores intervenes and, in an unexpected turn of events, ends up killing the landlord. However, when she returns to the basement, she discovers that the body has disappeared, and Luis reveals that he has taken care of it. As the two start serving a new type of empanada made from human flesh, the neighborhood becomes obsessed with the taste. Dolores becomes increasingly suspicious but finds herself caught up in a murderous spree to keep the shop successful.

“The Horror of Dolores Roach” addresses cannibalism with dark humor, skillfully portrayed by Machado and Hernandez. It’s a grisly and twisted tale, but Machado’s radiant performance makes it oddly enjoyable, making the audience root for her character’s survival. One of the highlights of the show is the intense struggle between Dolores and Ruthie, a private investigator played by the legendary Cyndi Lauper.

Throughout the series, “The Horror of Dolores Roach” maintains a playful and whimsical tone, never taking itself too seriously. While cannibalism has been explored in other shows like “Santa Clarita Diet,” “Dolores Roach” brings a fresh and unique perspective to the taboo topic. With a clever script and compelling characters, it manages to make cannibalism a strangely palatable choice for television viewers.
