Possible alternative: TV Series Reviving Characters from the Original Movie of ‘The Purge’

In order to launch a successful franchise, it is essential to begin with a captivating movie, a principle which The Purge adhered to. Directed by James DeMonaco, this gripping thriller, released in 2013, depicted a dystopian future in which the United States enacted a yearly event known as “The Purge”, where all crimes, including murder, were legal for a 12-hour period and emergency services were suspended. The franchise delves into the consequences and social implications of this government-sanctioned event. The initial film was a massive commercial triumph, leading to the development of four sequel films and a network television show that ran for two seasons. Another film, featuring Frank Grillo, who appeared in the first two sequels, is currently in the early stages of development.

The first film revolved around the characters James and Mary Sandin, portrayed by Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey respectively. James, a wealthy salesman of home security systems, has profited from the annual Purge by selling elaborate protection setups to affluent families. On the night of the Purge, the Sandin family locks themselves inside their home, but their son Charlie disables the security system to provide safety to a wounded stranger. Consequently, the privileged family is confronted with moral dilemmas as they defend their home against masked assailants and even their own neighbors. The evening ultimately results in the death of James, leading to a dark ending.

Director DeMonaco recently discussed the future of the franchise in an interview with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff, revealing that we may not have seen the last of the Sandin family. DeMonaco expressed his desire to revisit the family and explore the psychological scars they would have endured after their harrowing experience. He believes that the family would have moved away from their community, with Mary never being able to fully accept what the Purge represented, in contrast to her husband who saw it as a means to make money. The existence of the Purge had a profound effect on Mary’s soul, leaving her emotionally dead inside. DeMonaco envisions the family embarking on a journey to another country, only to find that the same cycle of violence persists there as well.

Nemiroff suggested that television would be a suitable platform to explore more intimate storylines within the larger context of The Purge universe. DeMonaco agreed, recognizing that television allows for a deeper exploration of the diverse perspectives on the Purge. While the films focus on explosive action and concise storytelling, television provides the opportunity for a more nuanced approach. DeMonaco emphasized the advantage of television in delving into the reasons behind people’s decisions to participate in the Purge, an aspect that cannot be fully explored in a film. He expressed his excitement about the potential for a TV show that would offer a space for smaller narratives and the chance to revisit beloved characters.

At present, The Purge 6 does not have a release date. However, all previous films in the franchise are available on 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray. The interview between Nemiroff and DeMonaco can be viewed above, while the trailer for the original movie can be found below.
