As the sixth installment of The Purge film series gears up for release, fans revisiting the movies may find themselves wondering about the timeline of the Purge universe. In a recent interview with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff, The Purge director and screenwriter James DeMonaco shed some light on the timeline of his creation and discussed why it may appear to be a “disaster.”
The timeline of the Purge series becomes convoluted due to conflicting information between The First Purge and the original film. In The Purge: Anarchy, it is revealed that the sixth Purge takes place in 2023, establishing 2018 as the year of the first nationwide Purge. However, the first movie includes footage from Purges in 2018 and 2017, and the 2017 footage is not from The First Purge, which focused on a localized experiment on Staten Island that presumably occurred in 2016. With these inconsistencies in mind, Nemiroff asked DeMonaco about what happened in 2017. DeMonaco acknowledged that the timeline is a “disaster,” but he also provided an explanation:
“The timeline is such a disaster because we couldn’t go back and retroactively open up ‘Purge 1’ to change the dates when I realized, ‘Oh, I’m all off here. I can’t make this work.’ So, yes, you’re right. I always believed that the second Purge, they went from Staten Island, which was a small borough seven miles wide, I think they would go to a state Purge. So they’d pick a state, New York, Georgia.”
The Purge Is an Ever-Expanding Event
DeMonaco went on to discuss how one way to address the timeline error is to view the Purge as an ever-expanding event. The New Founding Fathers needed the deadly night to yield successful results before implementing government-sanctioned violence across the entire country. However, DeMonaco admitted that this workaround does not fully resolve the issue. He remarked:
“[W]hen we did the TV show, I remember sitting in the writers’ room and we were trying to work out the timeline, I’m like, ‘Oh dammit, I think we’re off.’ We’re all trying to fix it and saying, ‘Okay, blah, blah, blah,’ but you picked it up. Yes, that’s the issue.”
Nemiroff suggested that this gap in the timeline could be addressed in future movies, to which DeMonaco enthusiastically agreed, saying “Exactly!”
The Purge 6 is currently in early development, with Frank Grillo expected to reprise his role as Leo Barnes. Further details, including a release date, have yet to be announced. You can watch Nemiroff’s interview with DeMonaco above and view the trailer for The First Purge below.
