Dutch Government Aims to Completely Outlaw Lootboxes in Games

The Dutch Government is taking a firm stance against the use of lootboxes in games, with plans to ban them completely in the Netherlands and push for additional regulations across Europe. This move comes in response to concerns about aggressive and misleading online sales practices, including lootboxes. Last year, a motion to ban lootboxes was submitted by House of Representatives member Henri Bontenbal and widely accepted. The motion argued that lootboxes can be considered a form of gambling, which is addictive and potentially harmful. The fact that lootboxes are already prohibited in Belgium was also highlighted.

In a recent publication on the official website of the Dutch Government, it is mentioned that the Netherlands has played a key role in improving digital consumer protection throughout the EU. As a result, the Netherlands will focus on implementing more rules regarding in-app and in-game purchases in the EU. The cabinet intends to enforce a ban on lootboxes, which are often used to offer users, including children, the chance to progress in a game or unlock additional features for a fee.

When contacted about the possibility of banning lootboxes altogether, a spokesperson for the Dutch Government confirmed the plans to improve regulations for in-game purchases and stated that one of the goals is indeed to ban lootboxes in games.

Lootboxes have been a controversial topic, with the Belgium Government ruling in 2018 that they constitute gambling. However, major publishers like EA have argued against this classification.

Overall, the Dutch Government’s actions reflect their commitment to consumer protection and ensuring a fair and transparent gaming experience for all players.
