Random House Children’s Books has entered into a partnership to serve as the primary publisher for the Afro Unicorn line, created by April Showers.

Random House Children’s Books has formed a significant collaboration as the “master trade publisher” for the Afro Unicorn line, an initiative developed by April Showers to represent the diversity and inclusivity of women and children of color. April Showers, an inspirational and trailblazing individual, is known as a “unicorn” due to her ability to successfully manage two business ventures, her children, and her personal life. However, she discovered that the unicorn emoji only existed in white. To address this, she partnered with a graphic designer to create a unicorn that embodies her likeness and created multiple shades that celebrate the diversity of women of color. This gave birth to Afro Unicorn. Since its inception, Afro Unicorn has expanded to include various products, such as apparel, accessories, toys, puzzles, books, bedding, bandages, backpacks, and collectibles. Last year, Afro Unicorn made its debut at Walmart.

Karen Kilpatrick, an agent at East West Literary Agency, approached Random House in March 2022 on behalf of April Showers with a comprehensive brand bible that brought the Afro Unicorn characters to life. Kilpatrick’s pitch, coupled with a Zoom meeting with April Showers, successfully conveyed the value of collaboration, convincing Sara Sargent, the senior executive editor at Random House, to embrace the Afro Unicorn brand. Sargent expressed admiration for April’s eloquent articulation of the brand’s essence and its paramount significance. She stated, “Her unwavering vision for the world of Afro Unicorn deeply resonated with us. It became evident that Afro Unicorn books needed to find their place in the market.”

Random House is now publishing children’s books featuring the Magical, Unique, and Divine characters, each possessing their own superpowers. These books emphasize themes of friendship and kindness and include titles such as A Magical Day, We Are Afro Unicorns, and The Most Magical Time of the Year. Future releases will include You Are a Unicorn, Divine Makes a Splash (a swimming special), and Magical Parade, catering to different age groups. In addition, a human-focused book titled Thank You, It’s An Afro is based on the experiences of Cassidy Bridges.

Furthermore, there are plans to introduce an Afro-Unicorns graphic novel line by an as-yet-unnamed publisher. This venture could be kept in-house at Penguin Random House or possibly make use of the Scholastic Graphix line. There is also speculation of potential interest from Mike Richardson.
