Internet Usage Surges in Algeria: Over 53.62 Million Subscribers in 2023, an 8.43% Increase

ALGIERS- The latest report from the Regulatory Authority for Post and Electronic Communications (ARPCE) reveals a substantial increase in internet usage across Algeria, with over 53.62 million subscribers recorded in 2023, compared to 49.45 million in 2022, marking an 8.43% growth within a year.

Out of the 53.62 million subscribers, 48.09 million were subscribed to mobile internet (GSM, 3G, and 4G), while 5.53 million were subscribed to fixed internet (ADSL, 4G LTE, and FTTH) by December 31, 2023, according to the report cited by APS.

Fixed Internet Sees a 17.66% Surge

The fixed internet market witnessed a notable surge of 17.66% over the course of a year, rising from 4.70 million subscribers at the end of 2022 to 5.53 million subscribers by the same period in 2023.

97.55% Residential Subscribers vs. 2.45% Professional Subscribers

Out of the 5.53 million fixed internet subscribers as of December 31, 2023, over 2.72 million were subscribed to ADSL and 1.71 million to 4G LTE. The number of FTTH subscribers experienced a significant increase, jumping from 478,172 customers to over 1.08 million within a year.

Residential subscribers accounted for 97.55% of the total fixed internet subscribers, while professional subscribers represented only 2.45%.

Regarding the various fixed internet offers, 83.75% of subscribers had speeds between 10 Megabits per second (Mbps) and 20 Mbps, 13.30% between 20 Mbps and 50 Mbps, 1.20% between 50 Mbps and 100 Mbps, and 1.75% more than 100 Mbps.

Mobile Internet Subscribers Reach Over 48.09 Million (+7.44%)

The mobile internet market also experienced significant growth, with over 48.09 million subscribers recorded by the end of 2023, compared to 44.75 million at the end of 2022, marking a 7.44% increase within a year.

Out of the 48.09 million mobile internet subscribers in 2023, over 43.06 million were subscribed to the 4G mobile network (compared to 38.79 million in 2022) and 5.02 million to the 3G network (compared to 5.96 million in the same period of 2022).

ARPCE also observed a 33.15% increase in the volume of mobile data traffic consumed in the last quarter of 2023, estimated at 1102.26 Gigabytes (GB) compared to 827.82 GB during the same period in 2022.

Moreover, the average monthly data consumption per subscriber increased to 7.64 GB in 2023, up from 6.17 GB in 2022.
