4K UHD and Blu-Ray Release Announced for ‘Upgrade’

The 2018 film, “Upgrade,” directed by Leigh Whannell, deserves more recognition than it received. While it may not have achieved the same level of success as other movies released that year or Whannell’s later film, “The Invisible Man,” it is still considered a breakout hit in the sci-fi horror genre. “Upgrade” has garnered positive reviews from both audiences and critics alike, solidifying its status as an underrated masterpiece. Now, Shout! Factory is exclusively releasing the film on 4K UHD and Blu-ray, complete with special features.

The 4K UHD release features an audio commentary with Leigh Whannell, the writer and director of the film. The Blu-ray version includes interviews with the creatives involved in the critically acclaimed film, such as producer Kylie Du Fresne, cinematographer Stefan Duscio, editor Andy Canny, and fight choreographer Chris Weir. Both versions of the film are available for purchase for $32.99.

Upgrade Is Recognized as an Underrated Gem

Despite its low budget, “Upgrade” showcases Leigh Whannell’s creative vision, compensating for any production limitations. Often compared to Sam Raimi, Whannell skillfully combines elements of body horror, thriller, action, and sci-fi, while exploring the unforeseen dangers of technological advancements. In addition, Logan Marshall-Green delivers an outstanding performance, further highlighting the complexity of his character.

Set in a futuristic world, “Upgrade” follows Grey Trace (played by Logan Marshall-Green) as he seeks revenge for the mugging that left him paralyzed and resulted in his wife’s death, portrayed by Melanie Vallejo. Tech tycoon Eron Keen, played by Harrison Gilbertson, offers Grey an experimental AI chip called STEM, which allows him to regain his mobility. Equipped with enhanced physical abilities, Grey embarks on a mission to find and confront those responsible for his wife’s murder. However, when the AI chip starts to take control independently, Grey must regain control before becoming the villain himself.

The Blu-ray and 4K UHD versions of “Upgrade” are available for purchase on Shout! Scream Factory’s website. Below, you can watch the trailer and read the synopsis.

“Set in the near-future, technology controls nearly all aspects of life. But when the world of Grey, a self-labeled technophobe, is turned upside down, his only hope for revenge is an experimental computer chip implant.”
