Fire Emblem: Three Houses is the newest entry in the long-running series. This tactical role-playing game was released back in July last year and recently won the Best Strategy Game award at The Game Awards 2019. It is an exclusive title for Nintendo Switch and has sold over 2 million copies since its release.
The game is set in the fictional continent of Fódlan, which is divided into three nations: The Adrestian Empire to the south and west, the Leicester Alliance to the east, and the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus to the north. Each nation is connected to each other via the Garreg Mech Monastery. You play as a former mercenary named Byleth, who gets enrolled as a teacher in the Monastery.
Given how much activities and side quests players have to explore in order to complete the 40-hour long campaign, beginners might struggle a bit. In this guide, we will give you a couple of tips to get started and discuss various aspects of the gameplay in Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
1. Choose your House
As you start the campaign, players will be asked to join one of the three school houses at Garreg Mach Monastery. Each house represents a nation of Fódlan. These are Black Eagles, Blue Lions, and Golden Deer.
The leader of The Black Eagles is Princess Edelgard, an heir to the Adrestian throne. The students in this house have specialized skills in magic.
Prince Dmitri of Faerghus leads the Blue Lions. The students are cavalry-oriented here.
The leader of Golden Deer is Claude, an heir to the throne of Leicester Alliance. Students here are more favorable towards archery.
You can choose any of the houses based on your preference. As you progress through the story, you get the option to recruit students from other houses as well.
2. Best Classes
There are five tiers of classes in the game– Starting, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Master, and Unique.
At the beginning of the campaign, the students you will meet are either Noble or Commoner. They require your assistance and knowledge to gain experience. As they learn more and soon participate in battles, they gain mastery in different classes.
You will find students tending to favor a particular skill that makes them suitable for specific classes. That being said, you have the option to assign a different class for students.
3. Participating in Activities
Fire Emblem: Three Houses give players the freedom to explore Garreg Mech, find lost items, and participate in various activities, including fishing, cooking, gardening, tea parties, and more.
The activity points you earn can be spent on students to boost their motivation. Make sure to spend your activity points carefully, as you need one activity point to join a tournament on the training grounds.
4. Bonding and Romance
Just like the previous iterations of the Fire Emblem franchise, you get to choose Byleth’s gender at the beginning. This also changes the way your character bonds with other students, even opening new romance options. As you explore the monastery, you will stumble upon several lost items. In case you spot the owners, you can give the item back to increase their bond with you significantly. You can also chat with students at a tea party or gift them a specific item to further enhance your chances. If you can get to ‘S’ support rating with a character, it may conclude with a marriage.
