Method 1: Simple Force Restart

Apple recommends first trying to force-restart your device, and we’ve shown you how to do that on different models of iPhone.

  • iPhone 8 and later models up to iPhone 12 variants: On the latest iPhone models, quickly press the volume up key and the volume down key in succession, then hold down the side button for a few seconds. If you did it right, you should see the Apple logo, after which you can release the side button. The phone will restart and it should be back to normal.

  • iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus (inc. 7th Gen. iPod Touch): On these slightly older models of iPhone, fix the iPhone black screen or iPhone white screen issue by pressing and holding down the volume down and side (or top) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, then releasing them at the same time.
  • iPhone 6s and all older models: For the oldest group of iPhones, you can press and hold the Home key and the side or top button simultaneously until the Apple logo shows on your screen, then release them at the same time.

Method 2: Fixing App Issues

In some cases, the error is not because of any software issue but rather one of your apps that’s causing the problem. One way to determine the cause is to check and see if this happens with one app regularly or with a different app each time. If it’s just the one app, that’s the culprit. If you get the iPhone black screen of death or the iPhone white screen when using a particular app, you can do the following:

  1. Restart your device using Method 1 above.
  2. Make sure the erroneous app is not launching on startup and running in the background; if it is, close the process.
  3. Launch the App Store app and look for any updates in the relevant section. If you see an update available for the app that seems to be crashing, download and install it right away.
  4. After the update, restart your phone again and check if the problem has gone away.

Method 3: iTunes Restore

If neither of the methods above applies to your particular problem, you can restore your device to a recent backup that you took the last time you hooked up your iPhone to your computer. However, you should know that any recent data on your iPhone will be deleted and you won’t be able to retrieve it. The reason is that you’ll only be able to restore whatever’s been backed up.   1. First of all, launch iTunes. Please note that this method only works with macOS versions older than 10.15 Catalina, which means Mojave and older versions. In Catalina or Big Sur, launch the Finder app.
  2. Now hook up your iPhone to the computer using the Lightning USB cable that came with the phone. You may see a security notification asking for a passcode or asking you to Trust This Computer. Enter the code or confirm the alert.
  3. In iTunes (or Finder), look for your device name and click on it. You should now be able to see a Restore Backup… button in the Backups section of the General tab.
  4. For the above step, you may get a message saying your software is too old. If you see that message, you will need to completely erase your device and start from scratch. If not, you can proceed to the next step.
  5. When you see the window containing the backups, click the dropdown menu and select the most recent one. If it’s encrypted, enter the password. Now click Restore and wait for the data to be synced with the computer. After the sync is complete, you can unplug the cable.

Obviously, the viability of using this method to fix the iPhone black screen or iPhone white screen issue depends on how recently you backed up the device. If the backup is old and you’re worried about losing data, opt for the final method.
