Plot twists have the power to captivate and surprise audiences, but not all plot twists are created equal. While some twists, like the iconic “Luke, I am your father,” leave viewers in awe, others fall flat. The Village, for example, had unique monster designs that were unfortunately revealed to be fake, leaving a bitter taste in fans’ mouths. Not everyone enjoys having the rug pulled out from under them.

Writing is an art form, and just like any other work of art, you want your creation to make an impact on the viewer. These films, with their mind-bending twists, certainly achieve that. While some twists may be better executed than others, they all leave audiences speechless by the end.

1. Atonement (2007) – Image via Universal Pictures

Atonement takes place in World War II-era England and tells the story of star-crossed lovers Robbie and Cecilia, played by James McAvoy and Keira Knightley. Their relationship is challenged by their differing social classes, but they overcome incredible hardships to be together. However, in a shocking twist, it is revealed that much of the film is a fictionalization created by Cecilia’s sister, Briony. Briony intentionally keeps the couple apart, leading to their tragic deaths.

2. Buried (2010) – Image via Warner Bros. Pictures

Ryan Reynolds stars in Buried, a survival thriller about a man named Paul Conroy who is buried alive by terrorists. The movie follows Paul’s desperate attempts to be rescued while trapped inside a coffin. Just as it seems like help is on the way, the twist is revealed: rescuers have actually located the wrong person and Paul is left to die a suffocating death, listening to comforting words over the phone.

3. Remember Me (2010) – Image via Summit Entertainment

Remember Me, starring Robert Pattinson, initially appears to be a standard coming-of-age romance film. Pattinson’s character, Tyler, navigates personal dramas and develops a relationship with his father. However, the twist comes when it is revealed that the film is set on September 11, 2001, and Tyler’s father’s office is located in the World Trade Center. This unexpected twist leaves viewers contemplative.

4. The Mist (2007) – Image via Metro Goldywn-Meyer

Based on a Stephen King novella, The Mist takes place in a small town that becomes overrun by Lovecraftian monsters. The survivors seek refuge in a grocery store, but as tensions rise, they realize their chances of survival are slim. In a heartbreaking twist, the protagonist, David, mercy kills his son and the remaining survivors, only to have the mist dissipate and reveal that the military has arrived to clean up the town.

5. The Descent (2005) – Image via Pathé Distribution

The Descent follows a group of friends who encounter terrifying creatures while spelunking. As the film progresses, it is revealed that the protagonist, Sarah, has actually been hallucinating the entire ordeal as a coping mechanism. In different versions of the film, Sarah either escapes the cave traumatized or dies within it.

6. Night of the Living Dead (1968) – Image via Continental Distributing

Night of the Living Dead, directed by George A. Romero, explores the horrors of a zombie outbreak. In a tragic twist, the lone survivor, Ben, is mistaken for a zombie by armed men. He is shot and added to a bonfire, highlighting the injustice and racial commentary present in the film.

7. Brazil (1985) – Image via Universal Pictures

Brazil, a dark comedy about a totalitarian government, follows Sam Lowry, a government employee caught up in a conspiracy. In the end, it appears that Sam is rescued by the resistance, but it is revealed that Sam has actually been driven to madness through torture.

8. Ghostland (2018) – Image via Vertical Entertainment

Ghostland, also known as Incident in a Ghostland, centers around Beth, a survivor of a home invasion. However, the twist reveals that Beth has been hallucinating her adult life as a coping mechanism for the trauma she experienced. Her sister, Vera, is actually the one struggling with the events of that night.
