Redmi Y3 Review: Great Selfie Phone under a Great Budget

Xiaomi has been one of the major smartphone brands in India launching amazing smartphones under a great budget. However, in the last few years, Xiaomi hasn’t got a good response as the company is expecting. This is because of the entrance of some other smartphone manufacturers like Realme which have given a tough competition to Xiaomi.

Although many of the smartphones from Xiaomi got a good response in India, buy ‘Redmi Y’ series is still struggling hard to make its place in the market. Neither Redmi Y1 got good response in India nor the Redmi Y2. And now, the company has launched its another phone from the ‘Y’ series called the Redmi Y3 which comes with a good set of specifications under a great price segment.

Redmi Y3 is almost similar to that of Redmi Note 7 (Review) but is less powerful than that. However, it gives a toe-to-toe competition to Realme 3. But the question arises whether it will be able to leave behind Realme 3 in this competition? Let’s review it to find out the answer.

Design and Display

Redmi Y3 comes with an attractive design which will certainly grab your attention. Like the recently launched Redmi Note 7, this phone also carries an Aura Smoke design. This new two-tone finish offers this phone a premium look. However, unlike to Redmi Note 7, this phone is completely made up of tough-quality plastic instead of a metal body.

However, thanks to its plastic body which makes it easier to grip the phone in the hands. In terms of size, Redmi Y3 measures as same as that of the Redmi Note 7 Pro which easily fits in your pocket. Redmi Y3 is available in a variety of colors to choose from including Elegant Blue, Bold Red, and Prime Black.

Redmi Y3 is intelligently crafted to make it perfectly fits on your hands. It has curved edges which makes it easier to make grip while handling this phone in hand. Also, all the functional buttons are placed in such a way that they easily reach out to the fingers. On the right side of the body, there placed the power and volume buttons while at the left of the panel there sits the SIM tray. At the top of the body, you’ll find a 3.5mm headphone jack coupled with an Infrared Booster and secondary microphone. While at the bottom of the panel, you will find a speaker grill, a Micro-USB port for charging and a primary microphone.

Now coming to the display, Redmi Y3 sports a 6.26-inch IPS HD+ display with a waterdrop notch at the front and a TUV certified blue light filter. Just above the selfie camera, a very slim earpiece is placed. Also, the display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection to give your phone’s display protection against scratches and drops. The display is quite sharp, vibrant, and good brightness.

Specifications and Software

In the all-new Redmi Y3, Xiaomi has bundled a perfect mid-range processor, octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 which is based on the 14nm fabrication process. The chipset features custom Kyro 250 cores and Cortex-A53 cores. This phone comes in two variants – 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, and 4GB RAM and 64GB storage – each comes with a dedicated card slot.

As I mentioned above, it comes with a dedicated card slot this means Redmi Y3 features a full-size SIM tray which let you to carry two NANO SIM card with an external MicroSD card at the same time. The phone also comes with good connectivity options as it includes dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS/ A-GPS, Infrared (IR) blaster and a 3.5mm headphone jack, also, it carries the standard suite of sensors.

On the software end, Redmi Y3 runs on the latest MIUI 10 which is based on Android Pie out of the box with a couple of pre-installed apps including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. It features a clean and immersive UI which makes it easier for the user to handle this phone. Also, Xiaomi has provides some cool themes in its theme store to revamp the complete UI of the phone. It also supports a list of gestures and some additional features like Dual Apps, Quick Ball, etc.

Performance, Camera, and Battery Life

Being an under-budget phone, you wouldn’t expect much from Redmi Y3. Even though, Xiaomi has coupled this phone with a good set of specifications. Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 SoC is capable enough to smoothly run day-to-day normal uses. Switching between daily used apps like Facebook, Twitter, Slack, and WhatsApp were as smooth as fluid. So, for a decent person looking for just a good performer, Redmi Y3 is the best choice. But what about its gaming performance?

As far as we have come across to the Redmi Y3, we were able to run some high-end games like PUBG: Mobile & asphalt 9: Legends smoothly in lowest graphics setting. This clearly means you can easily run lightweight apps and games very easily while compromising with heavy ones. And that what you expect from a phone in this budget. So overall, it delivers decent performance.

Now coming to the camera of Redmi Y3, this phone features a dual-rear camera setup which includes a 12-megapixel primary camera and a 2-megapixel depth camera which comes with Google-Lens integrations and is coupled with an LED flashlight. While at the front, it houses an AI-powered 32-megapixel sensor which comes with AI scene detection, 80-degree field of view and EIS for video stabilization.

Now talking about the rear camera quality, the 12-megapixel shooter captures great pictures with a good set of sharpness and vibrancy. It worked perfectly in the daylight situation, but you might feel some downgrades in the clarity while clicking pictures in low-light situations, but at this price, you wouldn’t complain. The Redmi Y3 is also capable of shooting FHD video at 60 fps with EIS through the rear camera. The Portrait mode also worked well with decent edge detection, but here the softening of images overall was more visible. However, we may expect Xiaomi to fix these issues at a later stage via a Software update.

The main highlight of this phone is its 32-megapixel front-facing camera. It clicks great selfies with the perfect combination of contrast and sharpness. It also captures highly detailed pictures even in a low-light situation which we really liked about it. And so, for a selfie lover person, this is a great device to carry with him to capture good moments. So overall, if we compare both of the camera’s quality we can conclude them to be great for this price.

At another end, Redmi Note 7 is fuelled by 4,000mAh battery which is capable enough to run this phone through the day. However, it lasted for around 15 hours on continuous usage which includes few hours of Gaming, social media for about an hour, some online videos streaming and YouTube and about an hour of music playback which looks fairly good. It comes with a 10W standard charger in the box.

Verdict

As per our review, Redmi Y3 is one of the best phones under the mid-range segment of Rs 9,999 for the base variant. It houses some latest and decent specification which is amazing at this price range. One of the best features of this phone is its 32-megapixel front facing camera which is unbelievable at this price segment. So overall, this is a worth buy product from Xiaomi.
