Realme X Review

Realme has recently introduced its new premium ‘X’ model as its first flagship phone in the Chinese market. This week, this flagship phone turned over to the Indian market and has gone today on its first “Hate-to-Wait” sale. Until now, the company has been launching some mid-range smartphones in the Indian market including the Realme 1, 2, and 3. But this time, the company has launched its first smartphone to come with high-tech specifications that are being made available in sub-Rs. 20,000 price segment.

The Realme X comes with tons of high-end features which is quite rare to get in this price segment. It comes with notch-free design, pop-up selfie camera, and an in-display fingerprint sensor all at a very affordable price. However, we currently have some good options available under Rs. 20,000 such as Samsung Galaxy M40, Vivo Z1 Pro (Review), and Redmi Note 7 Pro (Review). So, the Realme X has to face tough competition in the Indian market. Does the Realme X hold its own against its formidable foes? Let’s find out!

Design and Display

The Realme X comes with an eye-catching sparkling design. From the physical appearance, it is quite thick at 9.33mm, but it doesn’t feel too heavy, even at 191g. Starting from the front panel, it comes with a large 6.53-inch, full-HD+ OLED display with Gorilla Glass 5. The bezels around the display are very slim but is slightly thick at the bottom.

The thing which makes it different from other smartphones in this range is its notch-free display. It gives it a more premium look from the front and gives you a great viewing experience. Colors are vivid and punchy and has the perfect tone of brightness that makes the display content visible under any kind of light.

The Realme X comes with an in-display optical fingerprint sensor from Goodix, which is fast at authenticating your finger. You will also get five different fingerprint success animations to choose from. This smartphone also has face recognition that uses the center-mounted pop-up selfie camera. The company claimed that the pop-up mechanism on the Realme X has been tested to withstand around 200,000 cycles, so hopefully, you shouldn’t have to face any issues for as long as you own the phone.

The back panel of Realme X is made from polycarbonate material. Both of the color variants have a shiny finish at the nack panel. The best part is they don’t easily pick up scuff marks and smudges are not really visible on this phone. We have the center-aligned dual cameras at the top of the back panel along with an LED flash. Just on the same path, you will find the Realme logo at the bottom.

The physical buttons on the Realme X are placed very intelligently and are easily accessible. At the right of the body, you will find a volume and a power button, while on the left, there placed a Hybrid-SIM tray along with a dedicated Google Assistant button. On top of the display, you will only find the pop-up camera while at the bottom, it has a 3.5mm headphone jack, USB Type-C port, and a single speaker.

Specifications and Software

For the specifications on board, the Realme X is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC which we have already seen in the less expensive Realme 3 Pro. The SD 710 is comparatively more powerful than the SD 675 SoC which is also common in most of the devices in this range. However, the SD 710 is comparatively weaker in CPU performance but has better-integrated graphics capabilities and is slightly more power-efficient due to its 10nm fabrication.

In India, the Realme X is launched in two variants – one with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage (Rs. 16,999), and the other with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage (Rs. 19,999). It uses LPDDR4X RAM and has quick UFS 2.1 storage. Connectivity options available on Realme X include dual 4G with VoLTE, dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5, support for GPS, GLONASS, and the usual suite of sensors. This phone doesn’t have FM radio.

Furthermore, Realme X runs on the latest ColorOS 6, which is based on the latest Android 9 Pie. The phone comes with a couple of pre-installed apps like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and also have some third-party apps like Webnovel, NewsPoint, ShareChat, etc, which can be uninstalled at a later stage. The latest version of ColorOS features a clean and immersive UI making it easier for the user to operate to the functionality of the phone.

Performance, Camera, and Battery Life

As I mentioned above, Realme X comes with Snapdragon 710 SoC which is one among the good mid-range performer. It easily handles the multi-tasking without any lag. While testing, we run a couple of apps simultaneously and got no lag at all which was amazing at this price range. The company delivers this site with Widevine L3 DRM certification that allows this smartphone to stream videos from streaming sites such as Netflix at a higher resolution than HD.

All of the above, Realme X is going to be the best choice of gamers looking at the best gaming device under 20K. Realme X is intelligently crafted looking over to the demand of high profile gaming on Mobile. This phone easily runs heavy games without any lag. Specifically, PUBG Mobile is already preset to the High graphics setting and runs without any sign of lag. In the same way, it smoothly runs the Asphalt 9: Legends and other high-end games without any frame drop issue which is amazing at this price segment.

Now coming to the camera department, the Realme X comes with a dual rear camera setup that includes a 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 primary sensor with an f/1.7 lens and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor along with an f/2.4 lens. At the front, there is also a 16-megapixel Sony IMX 471 sensor with an f/2.0 lens and is available on the pop-up module, which is claimed to have a quick elevating rate of 0.74 seconds.

Coming specifically to the real camera. Under daylight condition,  the main camera on the Realme X does a good job with colors and detail. Distant objects have good definition and the overall image has good sharpness. Realme X also does a good job with HDR, and the dynamic range is good. The Chroma Boost toggle in the viewfinder helps boost colors and brightness, which helps when shooting in low-light situation. You also get a 2X digital zoom which works well for distant objects.

The low-light performance of Realme X was also is good. Photos lose their sharpness a bit and there is some visible noise in darker regions, but they don’t lose much sharpness. The portrait mode also gives decent performance thanks to its 2-megapixel depth sensor. Overall, the rear camera gives superb performance even in daylight and low-light situations.

Coming to the selfie camera, the Realme X has a 16-megapixel front camera, which also reduces the pixels when shooting with portrait mode. This gives you an 8-megapixel portrait shot, but when shooting regular selfies, even at night, the phone saves a 16-megapixel image.

Selfies shot with the Realme X were really impressive. They have the correct balance of colors and details. The AI isn’t too aggressive in beautifying your skin. Even in low light, selfies have good brightness and colors. You can add a bokeh effect for selfies, which looks a little artificial but has a good edge detection.

The Realme X can shoot up to the 4K video, but there’s no image stabilization. If you move a lot while shooting the video at 4K resolution, the processed video will be grainy and will be of no use. At 1080p, the phone automatically stabilizes video footage. This works well and there isn’t a lot of distortion when shooting in low light either. There are some slow-motion modes to play with too, including a 960fps mode.

At another end, Realme X is fuelled by 3,765mAh battery which is sufficient to run this phone throughout the day on normal usage. It lasted for around 13 hours on continuous usage which includes few hours of Gaming, social media for more than an hour, some online videos streaming and YouTube and about an hour of music playback which looks fairly good along with some daily multi-taking. Additionally, Realme X comes with VOOC Flash Charge 3.0 fast charging support to charge this phone from 0 to 75 percent in just an hour.

Verdict

Realme X is the first flagship phone by the company that is being available at a very affordable price. It is loaded with tons of features and a good set of hardware which is quite difficult to expect at this price range.

Although it doesn’t have expandable storage, this is not a big deal for many as it comes with 128GB of inbuilt storage. Apart from this, it has a vivid display, powerful processor, excellent cameras, and a huge battery. What else you can expect from a smartphone at this price segment? Out of most of the other things, the thing which we like the most is the addition of USB Type-C port which is rare to find at this price range. A thumbs up to Realme for that!

Although Realme has made a tough base in the country, Realme X has to face challenges from smartphones like Vivo Z1 Pro, Samsung Galaxy M40, and Redmi Note 7 Pro. Well, if you want a good looking phone with tons of features and a great camera, you can opt-in for Realme X.
